Abstract The Phillis Wheatley Literary and Social Club was formed in 1916 under the direction of Jeannette Cox, wife of Avery Normal Institute principal Benjamin Cox. This collection contains a single warrant issued by Henry L. Pinckney, Collector of the general tax for the parishes of St. Philip's and St. Michael's, to James S. Shingler, Sheriff of Charleston District, authorizing the arrest of the free black, Maria Louisa Silvanneau, of Charleston, for failure to pay the capitation tax of $2.77.
